May 2023

From September to April 2023, Musica Kirklees took part in the Nurture Project, run and funded by Changing Tracks of Hertfordshire Music Service.  The project focused on the development of teaching techniques for teachers working with Children in Challenging Circumstances and linked with one school to document the impact of small group, flexilble learning.

Our project was delivered by Georgie Tilley (instrumental teacher) at Hyrstmount Junior School in Dewsbury.  Georgie worked with a small group of boys who found accessing learning in a classroom setting to be challenging.

Here is what Georgie had to say -

‘Darren Abraham’s training on trauma, the neurobiology and safety, along with monthly peer discussions over the 6 months, solidified the importance and impact that this style of teaching practice has on vulnerable young people.

I witnessed a transformation throughout the year in the children’s personal and social development, the change from the first session to the last was almost unrecognisable.  No end goal or academic achievement target was given to us as a group, allowing us to co-lead sessions with no limitations or pressures to succeed.  Despite this, we ended up creating an amazing song which they are all immensely proud of, outlining to me the possibilities that come with individualistic focused learning.  Watching their imaginations and ideas expanding over the weeks was a joy.  Taking away movement and timing constraints helped not only their ability to learn, but the way they processed and delivered their emotions.

Giving them a freedom of expression within musical direction, with a nurturing space to learn and be present within their emotions clearly boosted their self esteem. Their personalities were shining at the end of the 6 months and the new level of friendship and respect they had with each other was beautiful.’

The project concluded in April 2023, however we now offer this approach to music teaching to all schools at our hourly rate. Please email [email protected] if you or your school are interesting in setting up a Nurture Group.
