Musica Kirklees Newsletter - Autumn 2019

Welcome to the beginning of a school year of exciting music making.  As you will read in this newsletter, the summer and the beginning of this term have already been action packed and this term brings with it a host of concerts, trips, recordings, festivals and performances.  You will read that Musica Youth Strings (along with some of our singers) have been invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the Music for Youth School Prom celebrations on November 13.  We are incredibly proud of this achievement and you may remember that last year Musica Youth Jazz had the same honour.  This is not just a testament to these talented young people, but also to their parents, carers, teachers and families who have supported them from an early age with those first steps learning to play an instrument and sing.  We want these achievements to be available to as many young people as possible, so please help us to spread the word: letting people know how valuable music education is and

how it enriches the lives of our young people.  Let’s keep on flying the flag!

A Weekend in the Dales

Musica Shelley junior and intermediate string, wind, brass and percussion players ventured to Ingleborough Hall in the Yorkshire Dales on the first weekend back this term for a residential weekend.

Rehearsing as a separate string ensemble and wind band, the players got together for workshops, followed by games organised by some older students for the evening.  It made for a lovely weekend of music making and friendship building.

Boost for Musica Batley

Musica Batley are celebrating after being awarded a Tesco Bags of Help Community Grant.  Customers at Tesco Batley voted for Musica Batley, in a shared initiative with Batley Grammar School, to receive £4000 to purchase equipment for a DJ and Music Production Course at the centre.  Thank you to everyone who voted for them!

New Children’s Choir

Musica Colne Valley, as part of their commitment to developing vocal music in their area, are launching a new Children’s Choir on Friday, October 11.  All children in school years 4, 5 and 6 are invited to join the choir on Fridays, 5.00 – 6.00pm at Colne Valley High School.

Musica Colne Valley Singers, the adult choir, are also on the lookout for new members (Fridays, 6.15 – 7.15pm).  No experience necessary – why not pop in and give it a go!

Musica Holme Valley on the Move

After many happy years at the school, at the end of last term we were approached by Schools Letting Solutions (SLS) to say that Holmfirth High School would not be available to Musica Holme Valley for rehearsals.

From the start of this term, Musica Holme Valley has been meeting at its new home at Honley High School and we’re delighted with the new location and the new possibilities it brings.  A huge thanks go to all the parents/carers, staff, volunteers and pupils who have made the move go so smoothly.  Also a big thank you to the music teachers at the school who are making us feel so welcome.

Musica Youth Orchestra (MYO) Talent Search

In July MYO hit the road (and the ferry!) on their tour of Western Bohemia in the Czech Republic.  There was lots of fun and even more spectacular music in a series of concerts performed in some truly breathtaking venues.   There was even a bit of Mickey magic to round things off with on a visit to Disneyland Paris.

For some instrumentalists this was their last adventure with the group before moving on to higher education or employment and MYO is now looking for talented young musicians to join their flagship ensemble.

There are currently chairs available for instrumentalists age 21 or under who are grade 6 standard in the following instruments:

* Flute

* Oboe

* Bassoon

* Trombone

* Tuba

* Strings

* Percussion

If you’d like to be part of MYO, please email niki.matthews@musicakirklees.org to arrange an audition or for more information.

Teachers – Let’s Get Singing!

Our Teachers’ Choir is back and open to anyone who works in a Kirklees school (not just teachers!).  It’s completely FREE, an ideal place to share ideas, network and have a good singsong.  Additionally, for those of you with responsibility for music in schools, there is the added bonus of picking up new repertoire and an opportunity to learn about conducting or directing singing.

The group meets on selected Tuesdays throughout the Autumn term, 4.30 – 6.00pm at Moldgreen Community Primary School.  For more details please contact niki.matthews@musicakirklees.org

A Weekend in the Studio

Musica Holme Valley spent a busy weekend in Hade Edge Band Room recording studio in September.  All the groups were given a chance to shine and create a memento of the occasion.  CDs are available to order now from the centre (£10) and will make an ideal Christmas present.

Amazing Opportunities from Music for Youth (MfY)

We’re so proud of everyone who took part in the MfY National and Regional Festivals earlier this year.

Musica Kirklees were represented by the following groups who made their way to Birmingham in July: Music a Deux (a collaboration between Musica Colne Valley and Musica Shelley Senior Wind Bands), Musica Colne Valley String Trio, Musica Soul Band and Musica Youth Strings.

The MfY Mentors were impressed and have invited Musica Youth Strings and some of our young singers to perform at the MfY Proms in the Royal Albert Hall on November 13.

In September, Musica Colne Valley String Trio accepted an invitation from the Unity Bank Trust, MfY’s major sponsor, to perform at an event at the People’s History Museum in Manchester.
